This Victorian gentleman's sword stick dates to 1900 and comprises a dark brown partridge wood cane with a shaped crook handle fitted with hallmarked London silver mounts. The cylindrical wooden shaft tapers downward from the handle towards a metal ferrule at the base, and separates to reveal a long, thin concealed steel blade. The visible details include natural wood grain patterns and segmented banding along the exterior casing. It measures 84 cm high, 12 cm wide, and 2 cm deep. Positioned beside the front door, this walking aid provides a functional accessory for a hallway, study, or gentleman's library. The compact profile allows it to stand neatly in a corner or umbrella stand, while the concealed blade construction offers an unusual conversation piece for antique collectors.

A sword stick, or sword cane, is a traditional walking cane containing a concealed blade, popular among 18th and 19th-century gentlemen as a discreet self-defence weapon.

They were typically constructed using dense hardwoods such as partridge wood, malacca, or bamboo for the shaft, paired with forged steel for the internal blade and metal ferrules.

Look for hand-forged steel blades, period silver or brass hallmarking on the collar, natural wear to the lower ferrule, and precise friction-fit or twist-lock mechanisms.

These items are commonly displayed upright in a hall stand or ceramic umbrella jar beside an entryway, or mounted horizontally inside a glass display cabinet.

Keep the wood conditioned with periodic applications of clear beeswax, store in a stable climate, and lightly coat the steel blade with mineral oil to prevent oxidation.
