Faience refers to tin-glazed earthenware developed during the Renaissance in Europe, heavily influenced by Islamic and Italian maiolica traditions, known for its opaque white glaze and colourful painted decoration.

Faience pieces are crafted from earthenware clay, fired once, then coated with an opaque tin-oxide glaze which serves as a canvas for metallic oxide pigments before a final glaze firing.

Authenticity is identified through characteristics such as crazing in the glaze, hand-painted brushwork nuances, iron-spotting from the kiln, and historical wear patterns on the unglazed foot rim.

These decorative vessels can be displayed as statement pieces on sideboards, mantels, or console tables to introduce historical texture and a classical colour palette to modern rooms.

Maintain faience by dusting gently with a dry, soft cloth, avoiding immersion in water to protect the porous earthenware body and delicate tin glaze from moisture damage.
