FAQs

Refectory tables originated in medieval monasteries, where they were used in the dining hall (refectory) for communal meals by monks.

These tables are traditionally constructed from solid hardwoods such as oak, featuring pegged mortise and tenon joints and long stretcher bases for structural stability.

Authentic period pieces typically display hand-planed surfaces, traditional joinery without modern fasteners, and natural patina, shrinkage, and wear appropriate to their age.

An antique refectory table can be balanced in a modern setting by pairing it with minimalist chairs or contemporary lighting to create a contrasting focal point.

Preservation involves maintaining stable indoor humidity levels, avoiding direct sunlight, using coasters and placemats, and periodically applying traditional beeswax to nourish the timber.
