Refectory tables originated in medieval monasteries where monks gathered for communal meals in the refectory, evolving during the 16th and 17th centuries into long, narrow feasting tables used in great English and European houses.

These pieces are constructed primarily from solid native hardwoods like English oak, joined using traditional pegged mortise and tenon joints, and feature sturdy stretcher bases designed to support the immense length of the plank top.

Authenticity is indicated by hand-planed board surfaces, visible peg joints, natural timber shrinkage, oxidisation and patination consistent with age, and structural hand-crafting rather than machine-cut uniformity.

Pair the historical piece with contemporary minimalist seating to create visual contrast, or anchor it within a rustic scheme using simple linen textiles and understated tableware.

Maintain the timber by keeping it away from direct heat sources and fluctuating humidity, cleaning only with a soft dry cloth, and occasionally applying natural beeswax to nourish the historic finish.
