Antique Georgian Mahogany Six Leg Drop Leaf Dining Table

Description

A particularly unusual George III mahogany drop leaf dining table dating to around 1800, distinguished by its elegant six-legged construction and wonderfully practical compact form. Made in beautifully figured mahogany with a rich warm colour, the table has a deceptively simple appearance when closed but opens to create a generously sized dining table.

The rectangular top is formed with two hinged drop leaves, supported when open by the additional legs beneath. Unlike the more commonly seen four-legged or traditional gateleg tables of the period, this example has six square tapering legs, giving the table excellent stability when fully extended while retaining a very clean and refined Georgian appearance.

When closed, the table measures just 55.5cm deep, making it an exceptionally useful piece for a smaller dining room, apartment or hallway where it can sit neatly against a wall as a console or occasional table. When required, both leaves can be raised to create a dining surface measuring 165cm x 108.5cm. The simplicity of the square tapering legs allows the beautifully figured mahogany top to remain the focus.

A very attractive and unusually constructed Georgian table, combining the elegance of late 18th-century English furniture with a remarkably versatile design. Its compact proportions when closed and substantial dining surface when fully open make it particularly suitable for modern living.
