FAQs

Faux bois, meaning false wood in French, became popular in the 19th century during the Victorian era, where artisans crafted concrete, terracotta, and metal objects to mimic the organic textures of tree bark and wood grain.

Traditional strawberry planters were typically constructed from porous terracotta, buff clay, or coarse earthenware, allowing necessary air and moisture circulation for plant root systems.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit age-related weathering, natural mineral patinas, hand-tooled surface details, and inherent manufacturing imperfections consistent with early production methods.

An antique planter can be integrated into contemporary spaces as a sculptural floor vessel or styled on a terrace with minimalist greenery to create a striking contrast between old and new.

Porous terracotta should be protected from harsh freezing temperatures during winter to prevent cracking, and cleaned gently with a soft brush and water to preserve the historical patina.
