Description

A good quality and rare example of an antique miniature William IV mahogany table, an apprentice piece or salesmans sample dating from circa 1835, perfect as a coffee table. This perfectly scaled down version could be an apprentice piece; used to showcase a young craftsmans skills or could have been a salemans sample; a portable example used by a travelling salesman to show potential customers what could be ordered.

In well-figured mahogany with beautiful age and patina it is of rounded oblong form, the top opening to reveal space inside for storage. It features a beaded edge and stands on baluster turned stem, on concave plateau with turned feet. Would make a very quirky coffee table or occasional table.

An apprentice piece, often termed a salesman sample, was a scaled-down model created by a woodworker in training to demonstrate mastery of joinery techniques to a guild or master craftsman.

Craftsmen of this period predominantly utilised dense native and imported hardwoods like mahogany, often featuring hand-cut dovetails, turned columns, and platform bases.

Authenticity is determined by period-appropriate tool marks, timber shrinkage, genuine age patina, and construction techniques consistent with nineteenth-century cabinet making.

This piece works well displayed on a desk, bookshelf, or side table as a focal point of historical craftsmanship alongside modern decor.

Maintain stable humidity levels, avoid direct sunlight to prevent timber fading, and occasionally apply traditional beeswax to nourish the wood surface.
