FAQs

Chinoiserie is the European interpretation and imitation of Chinese and East Asian artistic traditions, popular during the 17th and 18th centuries and revived in later periods, characterised by motifs such as pagodas, landscapes, and figures rendered in lacquer or paint.

These tables are typically constructed using solid walnut or walnut veneers, often featuring burr walnut panels on drawers, hand-carved cabriole legs, dovetailed joinery, and cast brass hardware.

Authenticity is assessed by examining timber ageing, hand-cut joinery, the type of secondary woods used in construction, wear patterns on footings, and the chemical composition of lacquers or finishes.

A Chinoiserie table adds visual texture and narrative when paired with contemporary minimalist upholstery or used as a contrasting accent piece alongside clean-lined, modern seating.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity, avoiding direct sunlight to prevent lacquer fading, dusting with a soft dry cloth, and occasionally applying microcrystalline wax to protect the polish.
