This early Victorian umbrella stand takes the form of a coopered oak barrel, dating from around 1850. The piece displays vertical timber staves in a deep chestnut hue, held together by multiple metal binding hoops. Wrought iron drop handles are fixed to opposite sides via rectangular backplates, and the initials L.B. are stamped into the wood on the front fascia. Signs of age include surface wear and varied tones across the timber panels. Measuring 56 cm high, 53 cm wide, and 41.5 cm deep, this substantial rustic container provides practical storage in a hallway, boot room, or beside a living room fireplace to hold walking sticks, canes, and umbrellas.

A coopered barrel stick stand is a wooden container crafted using traditional coopering techniques, originally designed or repurposed during the nineteenth century to hold walking sticks, canes, and umbrellas in entryways.

These pieces were constructed by master coopers using fitted oak staves bound securely under tension with wrought iron or steel hoops, frequently incorporating heavy metal carry handles.

Authentic period examples feature hand-forged iron metalwork, evidence of natural wear and iron oxidisation, historical maker or owner stamps, and staves secured without modern adhesives.

Position the stand near a front door or hallway to store walking canes and umbrellas, introducing warm wood tones and historical texture to contemporary or traditional schemes.

Keep the timber clear of direct heat sources to prevent staves from shrinking, dust regularly with a soft cloth, and periodically apply a clear beeswax polish to protect the aged surface.
