This antique Victorian Staffordshire flatback figure, dated 1860, is an earthenware earthenware piece finished with a lead glaze and polychrome enamel paint. The colourful figurine depicts a harvester sleeping between sheaves of yellow wheat beneath a tree trunk spill jar, wearing a cream hat, white shirt with a black bow, blue trousers, and black shoes. The flatback form is painted in cream, yellow, and cobalt blue with detailed facial features and hand-painted foliage. Measuring 15 cm high, 13 cm wide, and 7 cm deep, the object sits on a white oval base. Suitable for display on a mantelpiece, this traditional English Country House ornament functions as both a decorative figurine and a functional spill vase for holding tapers. The earthenware construction and glossy enamel finish provide a tactile surface that reflects light from any angle. It brings historical character to a shelf, cabinet, or side table in a living room, study, or hallway, blending easily with traditional or eclectic interior schemes.

Staffordshire flatback figures are 19th-century British earthenware ornaments crafted with a plain, flattened rear side designed specifically to sit flush against a fireplace mantelpiece.

These figures were press-moulded from earthenware clay, glazed with clear lead glazes, and finished with overglaze painted polychrome enamels.

Authentic period pieces typically show press-moulding seams, fine glaze crazing, a flat unpainted back with a small air release hole, and light surface wear to the overglaze enamels.

Place the figure on a mantelpiece, open bookcase, or window sill alongside modern ceramic vessels or framed botanical prints to create visual contrast.

Dust gently with a soft dry brush, avoiding submersion in water or abrasive chemical cleaners that could damage overglaze enamel paint or seep into microscopic glaze cracks.
