FAQs

Victorian dining tables often reflect the eclectic revivalism of the 19th century, drawing inspiration from Gothic, Elizabethan, and Classical forms while adapting to the needs of the industrial middle class.

These pieces were typically constructed from dense hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, or oak, utilising traditional joinery like mortise and tenon, often incorporating mechanisms such as brass castors and leaf extensions.

Authenticity is indicated by period-appropriate tool marks, hand-cut dovetails or joinery, the presence of old oxidisation on secondary woods, and hardware consistent with 19th-century manufacturing.

Pairing a historic wooden table with minimalist modern seating or contrasting textures helps ground a contemporary dining space while highlighting the warmth of the wood grain.

Maintain the finish by avoiding direct sunlight, using coasters and placemats to prevent heat damage, and occasionally applying microcrystalline wax to nourish the timber.
