FAQs

Refectory tables originated in medieval monasteries where monks gathered for communal meals in the refectory, evolving from boards laid on trestles to fixed, heavy-framed tables with stretchers for stability.

These tables are traditionally constructed from solid English oak, frequently utilizing mortise and tenon joints secured with wooden pegs, alongside hand-turned legs and robust structural stretchers.

Authentic pieces exhibit natural patina, hand-planed surface irregularities, traditional joinery methods without modern metal fixings, and dense, heavy timber construction consistent with the period.

A substantial wooden table serves as a natural anchor in contemporary dining spaces, balancing clean minimalist architectural backgrounds with contrasting seating such as upholstered modern chairs or industrial metal designs.

Preservation requires maintaining consistent room humidity to prevent wood splitting, avoiding direct sunlight, using protective felt pads under items, and periodically treating the surface with traditional beeswax rather than modern silicon sprays.
