FAQs

Victorian furniture, produced during the reign of Queen Victoria (18371901), encompasses a range of revival styles influenced by Gothic, Elizabethan, and Rococo movements, typically characterised by heavy proportions, dark woods, and ornate carvings.

Tables from the Victorian era were predominantly crafted from solid hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, and oak, frequently enhanced with decorative veneers, marquetry inlay, and brass hardware.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate joinery techniques, such as hand-cut dovetails, natural ageing in the timber and patina, traditional hand-applied finishes like shellac French polish, and minor imperfections indicative of hand tool use.

Pairing a period wooden table with modern, minimalist seating creates a balanced eclectic aesthetic, allowing the historical craftsmanship to serve as a focal point within a neutral or contemporary space.

Maintain antique wooden surfaces by keeping them away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber cracking, dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth, and occasionally applying appropriate microcrystalline wax.
