This late 19th-century English coffee table is executed in the Queen Anne Revival style from warm brown walnut and hardwood. The top surface displays fine quarter burr walnut veneers within a shaped removable tray rim, set above a shaped frieze and supported by cabriole legs ending in pad feet. The wood exhibits a rich dark grain finish and surface wear consistent with age and use. Measuring 36 cm high, 61 cm wide, and 46 cm deep, this compact piece serves functionally as a coffee table or portable tray. It fits easily into living spaces or reception rooms as a traditional occasional table.

FAQs

Queen Anne style furniture, originating in the early 18th century, is distinguished by fluid curves, cabriole legs, and simple pad feet. Tables in this style often incorporate burr walnut veneers with bookmatched patterns and tray-moulded edges.

Burr walnut tables feature decorative veneers cut from the abnormal growth on walnut trees, applied over a solid timber substrate such as oak or pine. The supporting frame and cabriole legs are typically carved from solid walnut or stained hardwood.

Authentic pieces display natural age-related shrinkage, hand-cut joinery, and visual depth in the wood grain created by decades of wax polish. Inspecting the underside reveals timber hand-planing marks and original securing blocks around the legs.

A burr walnut coffee table creates a warm focal point when placed in a contemporary living space alongside neutral linen upholstery. Balance the rich timber tones with modern art books, simple ceramics, and structured brass lighting.

Dust regularly with a soft, dry lint-free cloth and apply a quality beeswax polish twice yearly following the grain direction. Keep the table away from direct sunlight and central heating sources to prevent veneer lifting and timber movement.
