This George III demi-lune card table dates from the 19th century and is made of satinwood, mahogany, and sycamore with a warm amber colour. The fold-over top displays intricate sunburst marquetry inlay, fan marquetry corners, and radial wood grain veneers, supported by four slender tapered square legs. Subtle stringing lines decorate the frieze beneath the top edge, and the legs finish in small dark spade feet. Practical dimensions are 78 cm high, 89 cm wide, and 44 cm deep. The piece serves well in a hallway beside the front door or as a side table in a living room, providing a decorative surface when closed and extra utility when opened.

FAQs

A demi-lune card table is a semicircular table introduced during the 18th century, designed with a hinged fold-over top that expands to form a circular surface for playing cards or games.

These tables feature fine wood veneers such as satinwood, mahogany, or rosewood, constructed with fan-shaped marquetry, sunburst inlays, stringing accents, and square tapered legs.

Authentic period examples feature hand-cut joinery, a rear gate-leg or flight-leg mechanism to support the opened top, age-related patination, and secondary softwoods like pine or oak on internal supports.

When closed, the flat back permits placement against a wall in an entryway or living space, where it functions as an elegant console table for displays of ceramics, lamps, or books.

Keep the wood away from direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity to prevent veneer lifting, dust regularly with a clean microfibre cloth, and apply a natural beeswax polish along the grain.
