Description

A wonderful Burmantofts faience spoon warmer in a turquoise glaze, modelled as a grotesque frog type creature, sitting with its mouth open to hold the spoons. Spoon warmers were a quirky Victorian idea and were filled with hot water to keep serving spoons and cutlery warm. Burmantofts made them in a variety of highly sought after grotesque designs.

I absolutely love this and was looking for one for a long time before I managed to get my hands on this one.It is a fantastic design and is in what I think is the best colourway; a lovely rich turquoise blue. I will be very sorry to see it go, but sadly I can’t keep everything! Hopefully I’ll come across another one day…

Condition: There is a very small chip to the glaze on the chest area, and another on an eyebrow. There is some grazing to the glaze. No other damage, and no signs of restoration.

Spoon warmers were dining table accessories used during the Victorian era to keep silver spoons warm when serving hot foods such as soup or pudding, typically filled with hot water from a sideboard.

Burmantofts pottery, produced in Leeds, typically utilised local fireclay finished with colourful lead-glazed earthenware or terracotta, often featuring slip-cast or hand-modelled grotesque and orientalist motifs.

Authentic pieces usually bear impressed factory marks, such as the BFW monogram or specific shape numbers, alongside characteristic slip glazes ranging from monochrome turquoise to rich multi-coloured palettes.

These sculptural objects serve as striking focal points on bookshelves, mantelpieces, or side tables, adding historical texture and curious character to eclectic or maximalist interior schemes.

Dust gently with a soft, dry cloth and avoid submerging in water or using harsh chemical cleaners, as crazing in the historic glaze can absorb moisture and cause staining.
