During the 19th century, the expansion of commercial artist supplies led to the development of robust, adjustable studio easels featuring mechanical cranks and tilt mechanisms to support large canvas formats used by academic and impressionist painters.

These pieces were typically constructed from dense hardwoods like oak or beech, utilising mortise and tenon joinery alongside cast iron or wooden gear mechanisms designed to bear the heavy weight of large framed canvases.

Authenticity is indicated by period-appropriate hand-cut joinery, patinated hardwood surfaces showing decades of paint splatters and wear, and functional mechanical components crafted from cast iron or turned wood.

An antique easel serves as an architectural display stand in modern spaces, frequently used to exhibit large oil paintings, vintage maps, or framed mirrors without requiring wall fixings.

Preservation involves maintaining stable indoor humidity levels to prevent timber splitting, applying occasional applications of beeswax to nourish the dry wood, and gently cleaning surfaces with a dry or barely damp cloth.
