Description

This is a stunning antique Japanese table screen and frame from the Meiji era, circa 1890. Demonstrating great skill and intricate craftsmanship, the frame is in black lacquer which is hand enamelled in gold with gilt metal mounts and has typical Japanese pagoda styling. The panels have a beautiful white crackle glaze enamel and have been adorned with graceful cranes in black, gold and iron red. Each panel has an oval gilded opening for photographs to be displayed; the apertures currently display two Japanese Geisha prints which suit it very well. The reverse of the screen has little panels to access the photo openings.

This quality screen is in absolutely excellent museum condition, quite unbelievably so for the age of the piece. All in all a very nice and stylish example of the Japanese Meiji period and the skilled craftsmanship associated with it.

This measures 54 cms by 34 cms when opened out completely, each panel being 34 cms by 27 cms.

Meiji period table screens, produced between 1868 and 1912, represent a shift in Japanese craftsmanship as traditional techniques were adapted for both domestic use and export to Western markets following the opening of trade.

These items are typically constructed from lightweight wood frameworks finished with layers of black urushi lacquer, paper or silk panels, and hand-painted or embroidered motifs often enhanced with gold dust or leaf.

Authenticity is determined by examining the natural ageing of the lacquer surface, the fineness of the hand-painted details, the type of joinery used in the wooden frame, and occasionally artist signatures or seals.

Position the screen on a flat surface such as a sideboard or console table where it can serve as a focal point, pairing it with minimalist surroundings to highlight its intricate details and cultural heritage.

Keep the screen away from direct sunlight and excessive humidity fluctuations to prevent the lacquer from cracking, and dust gently using a soft, dry cloth without chemical cleaning agents.
