FAQs

Lignum vitae is an exceptionally dense, heavy hardwood known for its natural oil content and contrasting dark brown and honey tones. Treen refers to small, functional wooden household items crafted by hand or on a lathe, which were commonplace in British homes from the 17th to the early 20th century.

These items were typically shaped on a pole lathe or foot-powered lathe from a single block of seasoned timber. Craftsmen utilised hollow chisels and gouges to turn the dense wood, finishing the surface with natural oils or beeswax.

Authentic pieces exhibit extreme density, often sinking in water, alongside deep natural grain patterns that transition from dark espresso to warm ochre. Look for tool marks, patina from handling, and minor shrinkage cracks consistent with age rather than modern mechanical fabrication.

These objects provide tactile warmth and organic texture when contrasted against minimalist stone, glass, or polished metal surfaces. Place them on bookshelves, coffee tables, or window sills to introduce historical depth and artisanal craftsmanship to modern schemes.

Preserve the timber by keeping it away from direct sunlight, central heating, and excessive moisture. Apply microcrystalline wax sparingly to nourish the wood fibres and maintain the natural lustre without sealing the grain.
