A cricket table is a traditional British occasional table characterised by three legs and a circular wooden top, typically originating from the 18th century. The name derives from its sturdy, tripod construction reminiscent of a cricket stool, designed to remain stable on uneven cottage floors.

These tables are traditionally constructed from native British timbers such as oak, elm, or pine. Construction methods typically feature pegged joints, planked circular tops, and splayed legs let directly into the underside of the tabletop for stability.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate joinery such as handmade wooden pegs, genuine timber shrinkage, and natural patination developed through centuries of use. Signs of hand-tooling, irregular board widths, and oxidisation around the joints further indicate authenticity.

An antique wooden table brings warmth and character to contemporary spaces when used as a bedside table, an end table beside a sofa, or a display surface for ceramics and lamps. Pairing historical timber with minimalist modern furnishings creates a balanced, layered aesthetic.

Preserve antique oak by maintaining stable indoor humidity levels away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent wood splitting. Regularly dust with a soft, dry cloth and occasionally apply natural beeswax polish to nourish the timber without building up heavy chemical residues.
