Description

An extremely beautiful and very rare antique Chinese lacquered chinoiserie cabinet. This was made in China, we would date it to around the 1890–1910 period.

It is very unusual to find such a stunning and substantial peace in this style from this period, it is also a very useful item. It is large and impressive with stunning painted decorations in the traditional Oriental style. It has an overhanging top and sits on beautiful bracket feet, there is wonderful intricate detail to the patinated brass plates that are seen throughout the piece on all edges and on the door fronts.

This is in excellent condition for its age, with just some normal minor surface wear and patina here and there, commensurate for age.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Chinoiserie is the European imitation and interpretation of Chinese and East Asian artistic traditions, which reached peak popularity during the 17th and 18th centuries through trade with the East India Company.

Traditional lacquer furniture is constructed from timber bases finished with multiple layers of refined tree sap resin, which is then cured, polished, and frequently hand-painted with gold leaf or pigment details.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit age-related crackleur, hand-mixed natural pigments, traditional joinery methods without modern hardware, and wear patterns consistent with historical use.

Pairing highly decorative oriental pieces with neutral walls, minimalist architectural lines, and modern lighting allows the intricate hand-painted details to serve as a focal point without overwhelming the room.

Keep lacquered items away from direct sunlight and extreme humidity fluctuations, dusting gently with a dry microfiber cloth and avoiding chemical polishes or water.
