Refectory tables originated in medieval monasteries, where they were used in communal dining halls for monks to eat meals together.

They are typically constructed from heavy, durable hardwoods like English oak, featuring thick plank tops joined with traditional mortise and tenon joinery.

Authenticity is indicated by natural wood grain patination, hand-planed surfaces, pegged joints, and signs of genuine wear consistent with age.

Pair the table with minimalist contemporary seating to create a balanced contrast between historical warmth and modern simplicity.

Maintain the wood by avoiding direct sunlight, using coasters to prevent moisture rings, and periodically nourishing the surface with natural beeswax.
