Description

This is a fabulous piece of African art in the form of an axe. This looks to be a work axe rather than a hunting axe with its fine metal blade. The age of this axe is 19th century but its origin is not clear. It could be from the Senufo tribe in the Ivory coast but I can't be sure. What I do know is this is beautifully made and has a lovely patina and tactile feel. Moulted on a black stand this is a great decorative piece.

Height 69cm Width 41cm Depth 10cm

Date of Manufacture

TallBoy Interiors has dated this 19th Century African Work Axe to the 19th Century.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

These implements served dual purposes as utilitarian tools for clearing and agriculture, as well as status symbols or currency within various indigenous communities.

They typically feature hand-forged iron or carbon steel blades fitted onto dense, locally sourced hardwood shafts, often secured with hide or plant fibre bindings.

Authentic items display irregularities from manual smithing, natural patina, and age-related wear on both the metal and wood components.

Mounting the piece on a custom metal stand allows it to function as a sculptural focal point on a mantlepiece or display shelf.

Keep the object in a stable environment away from direct sunlight and humidity fluctuations, applying microcrystalline wax to the metal to prevent oxidation.
