Nineteenth century Spanish furniture often drew inspiration from earlier Renaissance and Baroque periods, reviving techniques such as ebonising wood to imitate more expensive materials like ebony and incorporating elaborate tooled leather surfaces.

These pieces typically utilized native hardwoods such as walnut or pine, which were subsequently ebonised using chemical stains or black finishes, and featured hand-tooled leather inserts secured with decorative brass tacks, alongside turned legs such as bobbin or spiral configurations.

Authentication involves examining construction joints for period-appropriate joinery, checking for hand-tooled details rather than machine stamping on the leather, and assessing natural wear patterns, oxidation, and wood shrinkage consistent with age.

Such a table serves as a strong focal point in a contemporary setting by contrasting its dark, historic texture against neutral walls, minimalist seating, or modern lighting to create a layered, eclectic aesthetic.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity levels away from direct sunlight and heat sources, dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth, and occasionally treating the leather surface with specialist neutral waxes or balms to prevent cracking.
