FAQs

Chinoiserie papier-mache items feature European interpretations of Chinese artistic motifs applied to pressed paper pulp objects, gaining immense popularity during the Victorian era in the 19th century.

These pieces are constructed from layers of paper pulp mixed with glue and resin, pressed into moulds, dried, and finished with multiple coats of dark lacquer, hand-painted details, and inlaid mother-of-pearl.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit genuine age-related crazing in the lacquer, hand-cut mother-of-pearl inlay rather than printed foil, and substantial weight due to the density of the compressed material.

Antique lacquerware provides a glossy textural contrast when placed on contemporary wooden surfaces, often utilized as a decorative catchall on a console table or coffee table.

Keep papier-mache objects away from direct sunlight and excessive moisture; clean them gently with a dry microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh chemical solvents or water immersion.
