Reading tables evolved during the 18th and 19th centuries to accommodate the growing popularity of private libraries, periodicals, and personal study among the literate classes.

Cabinetmakers primarily used dense hardwoods such as mahogany, often incorporating secondary timbers like oak or pine for internal drawer linings and structural supports.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints, traditional timber shrinkage, genuine patina from age and use, and historical fixings rather than modern machine screws.

This piece functions effectively as an accent table in a study or living area, paired with minimalist contemporary seating to highlight the rich timber grain.

Maintain stable indoor humidity levels, keep the wood away from direct heat sources and sunlight, and periodically apply a traditional beeswax polish to nourish the surface.
