FAQs

Treen refers to small, functional, handmade wooden objects crafted before the widespread use of plastics. Historically, these items were carved or turned on a lathe for everyday domestic, agricultural, or decorative use.

Treen items are traditionally crafted from dense hardwoods such as boxwood, lignum vitae, rosewood, and fruitwoods. Artisans utilised hand-turning lathes and carving tools to shape the wood, frequently relying on the natural grain for strength and lustre.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-turned tool marks, deep patination developed through decades of handling, and minor wear consistent with age. Modern reproductions often lack the characteristic weight, dry lustre, and subtle tool inconsistencies of period items.

Antique treen introduces organic warmth and texture to contemporary spaces. These objects can be displayed in collections on open shelving, arranged in shallow wooden bowls on coffee tables, or curated on kitchen worktops to add historical depth.

Treen should be kept away from direct sunlight, radiators, and rapid humidity fluctuations to prevent splitting. Periodic application of microcrystalline wax helps protect the surface and preserve the historic patina without damaging the timber.
