FAQs

Scrub top tables date back to the 18th and 19th centuries, commonly used in sculleries and farmhouses where the unsealed softwood top was vigorously scrubbed with water and sand or stone to keep it hygienic for food preparation.

These tables traditionally feature a softwood top, such as pine or sycamore, which tolerated frequent scrubbing, paired with a hardwood base made from oak, ash, or elm for structural strength and stability.

Authentication involves examining construction methods, such as hand-cut dovetail joints in drawers, handmade wooden pegs, and characteristic surface weathering and deep grain patination resulting from decades of manual cleaning.

A scrub top table works effectively as a central functional piece in a kitchen or dining room, contrasted with modern seating or minimalist lighting to highlight its historical texture.

Preservation requires wiping spills immediately, cleaning with a damp cloth and mild soap rather than harsh chemicals, and occasionally applying food-safe mineral oil to prevent the dry wood from splitting.
