Bijouterie tables, also known as vitrine tables, gained popularity during the 18th century and experienced a significant revival during the Victorian and Edwardian eras. They were specifically designed for the upper classes to display small precious objects, curiosities, and personal collections such as jewellery, medals, and miniatures.

These tables are traditionally constructed from fine timbers such as mahogany, satinwood, or walnut, often featuring delicate stringing, marquetry, or parquetry inlay. The upper section comprises a glazed display compartment, frequently lined with velvet or silk, mounted on slender tapered legs.

Authenticity is determined by examining timber ageing, hand-cut dovetails, traditional joinery methods, and the type of glass used, which often exhibits subtle imperfections in older pieces. The interior lining material and brass hardware should also correspond to the period of manufacture.

A glass-topped display table functions effectively as an accent piece in a formal living room or study. It provides a sophisticated surface to showcase curated personal collections while maintaining a visually lightweight footprint that suits both traditional and modern schemes.

Preservation involves keeping the timber away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent warping and fading. The wooden surfaces should be cleaned using a soft, dry cloth and treated periodically with appropriate wax, while glass components can be maintained with standard non-abrasive cleaners.
