Description

A superb set of antique mahogany and leather library steps in the Georgian style. They were made in England, and date from around the 1930’s period.

The quality is fantastic, they are very useful for reaching high shelves, and also make great side tables / decorative items. The mahogany frame is finely constructed, and the steps have inset tooled leather surfaces.

We have had these recently re-polished, the condition is excellent for their age. The mahogany has a wonderful patina with some minor marks and bumps remaining under the polish here and there, commensurate for age.

The brass topped pole that stands above the steps can be lifted out, so this breaks down into a smaller size for ease of transport.

Width – 20 inches , 51 cm

Depth – 20 inches , 51 cm

Library steps gained popularity during the Georgian and Victorian periods when grand private homes featured floor-to-ceiling bookcases that required physical access mechanisms.

Authentic period library steps were predominantly constructed from dense hardwoods such as mahogany or oak, frequently featuring leather tread inserts with gilt tooling.

Authentication relies on examining traditional joinery methods, natural timber oxidisation, hand-tooled leather inserts, and historical wear patterns consistent with age.

They can be positioned beside tall bookcases or used as a vertical display stand for small objects, plants, or books in a study or sitting room.

Preservation involves maintaining stable ambient humidity, dusting with a dry lint-free cloth, and occasionally nourishing the timber and leather with appropriate conservation-grade wax.
