Wax portraits, or ceroplastica, date back to the Renaissance and reached a peak of popularity during the 18th and early 19th centuries before the widespread adoption of photography. Artists sculpted three-dimensional profiles in tinted wax, often mounted against a contrasting background and enclosed in a protective wooden frame with glass.

Authentic period pieces typically feature beeswax mixed with resin or turpentine for durability, often pigmented to render realistic skin tones, hair, and clothing. The relief is mounted on slate, glass, or fabric backgrounds, housed within deep wooden frames, frequently accented with gilt inner liners.

Authenticity is determined by examining the ageing characteristics of the wax, the construction of the wooden frame, and the type of backing materials used. Period pieces often exhibit fine hand-modelled details, natural material shrinkage, and appropriate historical fixings on the reverse.

This piece works exceptionally well when grouped in a gallery wall arrangement with other small historical artworks, or placed singly on a narrow wall space to draw the eye. Its dark tones and tactile relief add historic depth and character to traditional or eclectic rooms.

Wax is sensitive to temperature fluctuations and direct sunlight, which can cause softening, melting, or discolouration. Pieces should be displayed away from heat sources and direct UV light in stable indoor environments.
