A snuff mull is a small receptacle historically used to hold ground tobacco, known as snuff, which was popular for ingestion through the nose from the 17th to the 19th centuries.

Traditional snuff mulls were typically crafted from natural ram or cow horn, frequently mounted with sterling silver rims, hinges, and lids, and occasionally embellished with gemstones like cairngorms or amethysts.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the natural patina and striations of the horn, the hand-forged construction of the silver mounts, and the presence of period hallmarks or maker marks on the metal components.

An antique snuff mull can be displayed as a cabinet curiosity, placed on a bookshelf as a sculptural object, or styled atop a desk alongside other small vintage desk accessories.

Horn should be kept away from direct heat sources and excessive dryness to prevent cracking, while silver components can be maintained with a soft microfibre cloth to control tarnish without abrasive polishes.
