Taper sticks were small, portable candlesticks used historically to hold wax tapers, which were thin candles primarily utilised for melting sealing wax on correspondence or for lighting larger candles and lamps before the advent of matches.

While many formal examples were crafted from sterling silver or brass, miniature and portable taper sticks were frequently turned from dense hardwoods such as boxwood, fruitwood, and lignum vitae by skilled turners.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit hand-turned lathe marks, natural patination from handling over centuries, dry grain shrinkage, and appropriate wear patterns around the socket and base rather than modern machine precision.

These compact items function exceptionally well as sculptural objects on mantelpieces, bookshelves, or desks, adding historical texture and architectural interest without overwhelming a modern minimalist space.

Boxwood objects should be kept away from direct sunlight and rapid humidity fluctuations to prevent cracking, and cleaned strictly with a dry, soft cloth while avoiding harsh liquid polishes.
