Hoshiarpur in Punjab, India, became a renowned centre for intricate wood inlay work during the 19th century, particularly under British colonial influence. Local artisans combined traditional craftsmanship with European furniture forms to create distinctive tables, screens, and boxes.

These pieces are typically constructed from dense hardwoods such as sheesham or shisham, intricately decorated with hand-carved bone, mother-of-pearl, or brass inserts forming complex floral and geometric motifs. The panels are often interlocking or folding, allowing for portability and clever modular assembly.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut, irregular inlay materials rather than modern synthetic resin substitutes, often showing age-related patination, slight shrinkage of the wood around the bone, and traditional hand-cut joinery visible on the interior structures.

An octagonal inlaid table works effectively as a compact accent piece beside a sofa or as a standalone display surface, adding global texture and historical contrast when paired with minimalist or neutral contemporary furnishings.

Maintain the wood and bone inlay by dusting gently with a dry, soft cloth and avoiding direct sunlight, excessive humidity, or chemical cleaning agents that can discolour the bone or loosen the delicate adhesive over time.
