This late nineteenth-century English country house dining table dates from 1880. Constructed from pale brown bleached oak, the piece possesses a rectangular top resting on a trestle base with carved ionic capitals, turned baluster uprights, shaped shoe feet, and a low central stretcher. The light timber shows visible wood grain throughout, complemented by crisp mouldings under the top edge and symmetrical curves along the feet. Measuring 76 cm high, 230 cm wide, and 105 cm deep with a clearance of 72 cm, the table provides ample space for seating guests comfortably. It functions practically as a dining room centrepiece in a traditional or modern home setting, accommodating everyday family meals as well as larger gatherings.

An English trestle table is a dining table design featuring a top supported by vertical trestle ends linked by a central stretcher beam. Originating in the Middle Ages for flexible hall dining, the form evolved into permanent timber tables during the Elizabethan and Jacobean periods.

Antique oak trestle tables were constructed using solid native timber joined with mortise and tenon joints, held together with wooden pegs. The trestle base typically features carved baluster turned columns supported by shoe feet and connected by a low stretcher.

Authentic antique examples exhibit hand-planed top boards, irregular peg placement, and natural timber movement over time. Examination of the underside often reveals original tool marks, hand-carved joinery details, and wear consistent with age.

A bleached oak finish creates visual lightness, making large timber tables suitable for modern country or Scandinavian dining spaces. Pair with upholstered dining chairs or modern seating to balance the heavy architectural base of the table.

Keep bleached oak surfaces dry and clean using a soft microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners or excess moisture which can alter the finish. Apply a neutral wax sparingly once a year to preserve the light timber finish.
