Butler trays originated in the 18th and 19th centuries in British households, designed so that servants could transport a tea service or drinks from the kitchen to the drawing room and place the tray upon a collapsible folding stand for serving.

Authentic period trays and stands are typically constructed from dense tropical hardwoods like mahogany, often featuring contrasting wood marquetry or satinwood inlay, dovetail joinery where applicable, and cast brass handles.

Authenticity is determined by examining the patination of the wood, hand-cut joinery, the type of secondary timbers used underneath, and the precision of the hand-inlaid marquetry motifs rather than modern printed veneer.

An antique tray table makes an excellent low coffee table or side table, pairing well with modern upholstery to create a layered aesthetic by styling it with a stack of art books, a ceramic bowl, and glassware.

Preserve antique mahogany by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber splitting, applying microcrystalline wax periodically, and using coasters or placemats to protect the French polished surface from moisture.
