Bilston enamel refers to decorative enamel-on-copper items produced in the Staffordshire town of Bilston during the 18th century, particularly the Georgian era.

These pieces were crafted using a thin copper base coated with a white enamel glaze, which was then hand-painted with mineral colours and often fitted with gilt metal mounts.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit fine hand-painted polychrome decoration, a characteristic craquelure or pitting in the white enamel ground, and period-appropriate metal mounts without modern machine marks.

These small decorative items work well displayed within glass cabinets, on bookshelves, or as focal points on side tables alongside contemporary objects to create a curated look.

Preserve antique enamel by keeping it away from direct sunlight, avoiding moisture and harsh cleaning chemicals, and dusting gently with a soft, dry cloth.
