The Glasgow School was a circle of influential artists and designers active in Scotland from the 1870s onwards, reaching its peak around 1900. Closely associated with the Arts and Crafts movement and Art Nouveau, it rejected Victorian mass production in favour of hand-crafted simplicity, symbolic motifs, and structural honesty.

Makers of this era predominantly used solid native timbers, most notably quarter-sawn oak, which highlighted natural grain patterns and medullary rays. Construction often involved visible joinery, pegged joints, and geometric structural frameworks designed to emphasise utility and craftsmanship.

Authenticity is typically verified by examining construction techniques, such as pegged mortise and tenon joints, tool marks, and characteristic stylistic motifs like stylised heart cut-outs, elongated vertical lines, and minimal ornamentation. Makers marks or stamps from associated guilds can also help confirm provenance.

An antique wooden piece of this style adds architectural gravity and historical texture to contemporary spaces. It works effectively as an occasional display surface in a minimalist room, pairing well with neutral walls, natural textiles, and uncluttered surroundings to let the craftsmanship stand out.

Maintain antique timber by keeping it away from direct sunlight and extreme temperature fluctuations, which can cause wood to split. Clean surfaces gently with a soft, dry cloth and periodically nourish the finish with traditional beeswax rather than modern silicone-based polishes.
