FAQs

Treen refers to small, functional domestic wooden objects made by hand before the widespread adoption of mass-produced ceramics and plastics, often dating from the 17th to the 19th centuries.

Treen makers typically utilised dense, locally sourced hardwoods such as elm, sycamore, beech, and boxwood to withstand daily culinary use.

Authentic pieces generally display characteristic tool marks from lathes or hand-carving, shrinkage cracks, natural wear patterns, and deep oxidisation or patina accumulated over centuries.

These historical wooden items add organic warmth and texture when displayed on surfaces like sideboards or open shelving, contrasting effectively against modern minimalist backdrops.

Antique treen should never be submerged in water or put in a dishwasher; instead, clean it with a dry or barely damp cloth and occasionally treat it with food-safe mineral oil or beeswax to prevent the timber from drying out.
