This eighteenth-century Meissen hard-paste porcelain figurine depicts a pair of gardeners styled in the Rococo taste. The male figure stands holding a basket of flowers, dressed in a white jacket and purple breeches, while the female figure sits against a tree branch wearing a yellow skirt and a pink hat, holding flowers towards him. A vegetable basket rests on the ground between them atop a white rococo scroll base adorned with green foliage. The piece is finished in a polychrome enamel glaze with detailed hand-painting, showing a vertical hairline fracture running through the central base and figures. Measuring 19 cm high, 9 cm wide, and 7 cm deep, this item possesses practical dimensions for display. Placed in a home today, this porcelain sculpture suits display on a mantelpiece or within a decorative cabinet, bringing a touch of pastoral French Chateau design to an interior setting.

Meissen porcelain figurines from the 18th century were developed in Germany following the invention of European hard-paste porcelain. Pastoral and idyllic themes, such as gardeners, shepherds, and courtly figures, were popularised during the Rococo period as aristocratic table decorations and display cabinet showpieces.

These figures were produced from hard-paste porcelain, composed of kaolin and petuntse, which allowed for crisp detail and durability. The figures were cast in piece-moulds, hand-assembled, fired at high temperatures, and subsequently decorated with overglaze enamels and gilding.

Authentic pieces generally feature the underglaze blue crossed swords factory mark on the underside. Period examples show hand-modelled details, incised model numbers, press numbers, and precise enamel painting consistent with 18th-century workshop techniques.

Antique porcelain figures can be styled on a mantelpiece, inside an illuminated glass display cabinet, or atop a sideboard. Pairing ceramic sculptures with understated background decor allows the detailed enamelling and historic forms to serve as a focal point.

Preservation requires dusting with a soft, clean brush or microfibre cloth to avoid snagging delicate bocage foliage or fingers. Liquid immersion and harsh detergents should be avoided, particularly if previous professional repairs are present.
