A lowboy is a small table with drawers, typically used as a dressing table, side table, or small writing desk, which gained popularity during the late 17th and 18th centuries.

Traditional lowboys were predominantly constructed from native hardwoods such as oak, walnut, or mahogany, featuring hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawers and pegged mortise and tenon joinery.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-correct construction markers such as hand-sawn timber grain irregularities, hand-beveled drawer linings, and original brass hardware or appropriately aged fixing holes.

A lowboy can be utilised as an entryway console or a distinctive side table, contrasting its historical patination against minimalist contemporary decor and neutral walls.

Preserve the timber by maintaining stable room temperatures, avoiding direct sunlight, and periodically feeding the wood with traditional beeswax rather than modern silicone polishes.
