This Victorian rocking horse stands on a timber safety stand mechanism and measures 120 cm high, 130 cm wide, and 46 cm deep. The carved wooden body wears a light dapple grey finish with dark spots, complemented by white hair for the mane, a black leather bridle with red rosette decorations, and a pink needle cord saddle. Metal stirrups hang from straps on both sides. The safety stand consists of wooden rocking rails joined by stretcher bars and upright supports. Placed in an empty corner of a home today, this piece functions as both a decorative object and a traditional toy. The wooden framework shows visible grain and bolted joints, while the horse displays painted hooves and bridle hardware.

Invented in the late 19th century, the safety stand rocking horse used a swing glider mechanism on a stationary wooden frame rather than traditional curved bow rockers to prevent injury and save floor space during the Victorian era.

Traditional rocking horses were carved from timber, finished with painted dappled coats, and fitted with genuine leather tack, metal stirrups, and natural horsehair for the mane and tail.

Authentic pieces often feature glass or hand-painted eyes, carved muscular detail along the neck and legs, leather tack fastened with metal studs, and a timber stand exhibiting natural surface wear and oxidisation.

A carved rocking horse functions as a decorative focal point when placed in a hallway, childs nursery, or adjacent to a fireplace alcove to add historical texture to a room scheme.

Keep the timber structure away from direct heat sources to prevent wood movement, gently dust the mane and tail with a soft brush, and apply specialist conditioner to the leather elements.
