This William IV console table dates from the nineteenth century and exhibits a warm brown mahogany timber construction with a polished finish. The piece takes the form of a rectangular side table standing upon four ring-turned legs with reeded detailing and shaped feet, supporting a top surface above a plain frieze. A carved and shaped scrolled backboard gallery rises along the rear edge, featuring elaborate scrollwork and central carved ornaments. The timber displays rich grain patterns across all visible surfaces, including the top board, frieze, and upright gallery. Measuring 109 cm high, 122 cm wide, and 48 cm deep, the table fits into practical interior spaces such as hallways, entranceways, or living rooms. In a contemporary home, this piece suits placement beside the front door as a functional surface for keys and mail, or functions as a decorative console against a living area wall to display lamps, bowls, or books while adding traditional nineteenth-century character to the interior.

FAQs

The William IV period spans roughly 1830 to 1837, serving as a stylistic transition between the refined lightness of the Regency period and the heavier ornamentation of early Victorian furniture. Characterised by robust proportions, architectural carving, bold scrollwork, and turned reeded legs, pieces from this era predominantly utilised high-quality timbers such as mahogany and rosewood.

Console tables from this period were predominantly crafted using solid mahogany or mahogany veneers over pine or oak carcases. Structural elements relied on traditional joinery techniques, including hand-cut mortise and tenon joints, while decorative accents featured hand-carved galleries, scrollwork, and turned legs.

Authentic pieces feature signs of age and handcraftsmanship, such as hand-cut joinery on frame corners, uneven hand-sawn secondary timbers underneath, and natural patination across polished surfaces. Look for period-accurate architectural motifs, such as carved acanthus leaves or scrolled upstands, paired with weighted, turned legs.

An antique console table works well as a focal point in an entryway or hallway, topped with a contemporary table lamp, ceramic vessels, or stacked art books. Placing modern artwork or a clean-lined mirror directly above the table creates a deliberate visual contrast between historical craftsmanship and contemporary aesthetic.

Maintain the finish by dusting regularly with a clean, dry microfibre cloth and applying a high-grade beeswax polish once or twice a year in the direction of the wood grain. Keep the table away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent the timber from warping, drying out, or fading.
