Description

A beautiful and quite unusual antique French circular dining table in rosewood. This dates from around the 1850-1870 period.

It is of outstanding quality and has a beautiful design. It sits on three beautifully carved solid rosewood legs, meaning that it can seat six people, as long as the chairs are relatively slim at the front. The rosewood grain patterns and colour tones are gorgeous throughout.

We have recently had this re-polished, the condition is excellent for its age. There are just various very small marks here and there remaining beneath the polish, commensurate for age.

French antique tables from the 19th century frequently feature intricate carved details, cabriole or tapered legs, and rich timber veneers such as rosewood or mahogany, reflecting the classical design movements of the period.

Cabinet makers typically utilised solid secondary timbers like oak or pine for internal frames, applying expensive exotic veneers such as Brazilian rosewood or walnut to visible surfaces, often complemented by cast brass castors.

Authenticity is determined by examining construction methods such as hand-cut dovetails, traditional joinery, natural shrinkage cracks, patination of the wood, and the weight and density characteristic of period rosewood.

Pairing a dark timber antique table with modern minimalist chairs creates a balanced contrast, allowing the historical craftsmanship to serve as a focal point within a neutral, clean-lined room scheme.

Maintain antique rosewood by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent veneer cracking, dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth, and occasionally applying beeswax to nourish the timber.
