Description

William IV Rosewood Circular Breakfast Table – Circa 1835

An elegant William IV rosewood circular breakfast table, circa 1835, featuring a beautifully figured top with rich colour, striking grain patterns and a finely carved pedestal base.

The impressive circular top is veneered in highly figured rosewood, displaying wonderful symmetrical grain patterns with deep reddish-brown tones and attractive darker figuring. This Regency dining table is a William IV circular breakfast table in rosewood, dating from circa 1835. The timber displays deep reddish-brown tones with darker figuring, a polished finish, and book-matched veneer arranged symmetrically across the top. Below, a triform base rests on carved scroll feet with foliate detailing, supporting a tilt-top mechanism that allows the circular surface to stand vertically. Measuring 74 cm high, 131 cm wide, and 131 cm deep, the table functions as an occasional dining table or centre table in traditional and contemporary interiors. It provides a practical surface for daily dining while offering a space-saving option when the top is tilted upright against its base.

Originating in the 1830s, William IV breakfast tables bridge the Regency and Victorian eras, typically featuring circular tilt-tops crafted from highly figured rosewood resting on heavy central pedestals with carved triform or quadform bases.

These tables were constructed using fine timber veneers, most notably Brazilian rosewood or mahogany, laid over solid oak or pine cores with solid brass tilt-latch hardware and heavy timber block foundations.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-cut joinery, brass or cast iron spring-catch mechanisms on the underside, natural shrinkage marks in the timber, and original hand-carved details along the feet and pedestal.

A circular rosewood table can serve as a focal point in a dining area or large entrance hall, visually grounded when paired with contemporary seating, minimalist ceramics, and modern lighting fixtures.

To preserve the finish, place the item away from direct sunlight and central heating sources, dust regularly with a soft dry cloth, and apply a light coat of natural beeswax polish annually.
