Scrimshaw is the art and craft created by whalers, sailors, and fishermen, typically involving the carving and engraving of whale teeth, whalebone, or walrus ivory. Dating back primarily to the 18th and 19th centuries, this folk art form was practiced during long whaling voyages, often depicting maritime scenes, ships, and coastal life.

Authentic period scrimshaw is traditionally carved from organic materials sourced during whaling expeditions, most commonly sperm whale teeth, baleen, whalebone, and occasionally walrus ivory or marine mammal tusks.

Authenticity is assessed through examination of the materials natural grain and patina, the method of engraving which typically involves dark ink or wax rubbed into fine hand-scored lines, and signs of age-related wear such as shrinkage cracks or oxidation. Modern replicas often lack the natural yellowing patina and hand-carved irregularity of genuine 19th-century pieces.

This type of maritime artifact works well displayed on a mantelpiece, inside a glass cabinet, or on a desk paired with traditional study accessories. Its neutral tone and historical narrative complement both traditional and eclectic interiors.

Organic materials like whalebone and ivory are sensitive to environmental fluctuations. They should be kept away from direct sunlight, high heat sources, and excessive humidity to prevent warping, cracking, or fading of the engraved lines.
