Description

A wonderful antique Edwardian inlaid mahogany writing table / desk. This was made in England, it dates from the 1900-1910 period.

It has a fantastic design and is of superb quality. The break fronted top has a pierced brass gallery, it stands on tapered legs terminating in brass casters. The mahogany has beautiful satin wood inlays throughout and top quality brass handles on the drawers. The central drawer opens normally, the two drawers either side open on hinges and contain divided compartments for letters and stationary. There is even an original glass inkwell inside one drawer. There is an inset gold tooled green leather writing surface which compliments the mahogany beautifully.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Edwardian furniture, produced during the reign of King Edward VII from 1901 to 1910, is characterised by lighter proportions, revival styles inspired by Sheraton and Hepplewhite, and delicate marquetry or stringing.

These tables were typically crafted from solid mahogany or satinwood, often featuring contrasting wood veneers such as boxwood or ebony stringing, with leather or faux-leather writing surfaces and cast-brass hardware.

Authentic pieces often exhibit period-appropriate joinery such as hand-cut dovetails in the drawer construction, natural patination on the timber and hardware, and traditional hand-applied finishes like French polish.

An antique writing table can be integrated into a modern home by pairing it with minimalist seating to create contrast, or using it as a functional console or vanity table to anchor a room.

Preserve antique wood by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent warping, dusting regularly with a dry cloth, and occasionally applying microcrystalline wax to nourish the finish.
