This Edwardian kidney bean writing desk from 1910 displays a classically refined design executed in mahogany with satinwood banding and a warm brown colour. The piece includes a raised superstructure fitted with small drawers flanking a central alcove, a dark leather writing surface inset into the desktop, and circular brass drop-handles on the drawer fronts. A delicate pierced brass gallery rail runs along the upper edge of the superstructure, and the whole assembly stands on slender tapered square legs. The desk measures 104 cm high, 121 cm wide, and 60 cm deep. Ideal for daily writing tasks or administrative duties, this versatile item suits a home study, library, or living room as a functional workspace or a decorative centrepiece.

Emerging in the early 20th century, Edwardian kidney desks are characteristically shaped with a soft concave front to allow the writer closer access to the surface. These pieces often draw inspiration from 18th-century Sheraton and Hepplewhite designs, featuring delicate proportions, fine wood veneers, and decorative marquetry or stringing.

Craftsmen predominantly utilised solid mahogany or satinwood frames faced with rich veneers, often accented with boxwood stringing, tulipwood crossbanding, and gilded brass handles. Writing surfaces frequently feature inset tool leather embossed with gold or blind leaf patterns.

Authentic Edwardian pieces display fine hand-carved details, dovetail drawer joints, brass gallery rails, and period-correct brass handles. The timber exhibits natural aging and patination beneath polished varnish, while drawer linings are typically constructed from solid oak or mahogany.

Position the desk near a window or central wall in a dedicated study or living room to accentuate its distinct silhouette. Pairing the piece with a contemporary minimalist armchair or statement brass lighting creates a balanced contrast between historic craftsmanship and modern interior design.

Dust regularly using a soft dry microfibre cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year in the direction of the grain. Keep the timber away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent veneer cracking or leather fading, and treat leather surfaces with specialised hide care products.
