This Victorian Tunbridge Ware basket, dating from 1870, takes an octagonal form in warm brown rosewood, walnut, and mixed woods, complete with an overhead bentwood handle and a green baize base. The interior walls display eight angled panels decorated with intricate tessellated mosaic micro-mosaic floral wood inlay, complemented by a plain polished wooden base and dark metal pivot hardware securing the handle. The piece measures 17 cm wide and 17 cm deep. Positioned on a sideboard top, this small decorative basket serves as an elegant display piece or a container for small domestic items in an English country house interior.

FAQs

Tunbridge Ware is a style of decorative timber mosaic marquetry produced primarily in and around Tonbridge and Tunbridge Wells in Kent during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The technique involves bundling thin strips of variously coloured woods together in a pattern, gluing them, and slicing them crosswise to create intricate tessellated designs.

Makers utilized naturally coloured native British timbers such as holly, sycamore, Yew, oak, plum, and laburnum rather than artificial dyes. Veneers of exotic woods like rosewood and mahogany often provided the primary structural body and dark framing elements.

Authentic pieces feature end-grain wood mosaic inlays with fine, geometric, floral, or topographical patterns rather than painted details. Look for construction features like glued veneer joints, natural timber colour variations, and typical Victorian forms such as sewing baskets, stamp boxes, and writing slopes.

A small decorative wooden basket functions effectively as a focal point on a console, sideboard, or mantelpiece. It can be displayed empty to highlight the detailed marquetry work or used to hold small items in a hallway or library setting.

Keep wooden objects away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent shrinkage, cracking, or fading of the timber mosaic. Dust gently with a dry, soft microfibre cloth and avoid using harsh chemical sprays or water.
