A Victorian cased brass microscope is a 19th-century scientific magnification instrument, constructed primarily from lacquered brass and housed in a fitted wooden carrying case.

These instruments were typically constructed from polished brass for the optical tube and mechanical stages, cast iron or bronze for the sturdy base, and housed in fitted mahogany or walnut boxes lined with velvet or silk.

Authentic pieces often feature hand-engraved maker signatures on the barrel, rack-and-pinion focusing mechanisms, heavy cast bases, and signs of age such as patina on the brass and dovetail joints on the wooden storage case.

An antique microscope can be displayed as a focal point on a study desk, within a glass-fronted cabinet, or on a bookshelf to add a scholarly and sophisticated element to the space.

Preserve the natural patina by avoiding harsh metal polishes. Dust the brass gently with a soft microfibre cloth and store the instrument in a climate-controlled environment away from direct sunlight and excessive humidity.
